Hot Flush is an immersive audio installation that explores the unreliability of personal memory and the consequent importance of democratising storytelling. Through sculpture, recitation and collaboration, Hot Flush highlights how our narratives shape and define us as individuals and families, with each strand of the tale revealing more about the narrator than the subject. Often employing and oversaturating the domestic and banal, for Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, Mendick has recreated her childhood back garden in the gallery setting, utilising its inherently 1990s nostalgic characteristics as a platform for storytelling and the exploration of her family history.
